The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
