Courtroom illustration Legal proceedings
Jon Ruben admitted 17 criminal counts at the judicial center on Friday

A person who contaminated candy with tranquilliser and gave them to minors at a summer camp in the area has admitted sexual offenses against two young males aged nine and ten years old.

The defendant was arrested after eight minors and a grown-up experienced illness at the facility in mid-summer.

The senior citizen, from that region, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he appeared at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

Yet, he denied one particular crime he was accused of, which was involving a young boy.

Ruben was kept in jail before a additional proceeding on late November.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, detailed the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She explained his victims were under-privileged children who were staying at a youth camp which he ran.

Ruben played a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel stated, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were settling down and ask them to ingest treats "rapidly".

She stated to the judge the man had conducted this practice with the young males "over an extended period", and minors had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She explained the defendant had been able to explain this over a long period as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in recently.

The prosecutor continued: "This year his stepson had suspicions about what was going on, for good reason.

"They decided to have a look in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel stated objects including lubricant, petroleum jelly and medical needles were discovered, and his stepchild notified the authorities about his concerns.

She stated the man continued to play the "candy game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were all ill the following morning.

"The police had not responded by that stage," she added.

The oversight body, the investigative body, had stated that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the events.

Mrs Prior explained the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so the family member notified the police once more.

She explained the man then engaged in the "candy game" in a room of five children.
