A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
