Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled some conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained no previously unseen data.
